BEing is a Choice

“’Doing’ is a means to an end but ‘Being’ is a choice.” This quote came to me as I was preparing for a meditation this month. I thought it was important because it embodies what I have been teaching for years now. Things happen and we react to what is happening by ‘doing’ something to change it if we don’t like what is happening. Even when our heart is in the right place we are still manipulating what is happening in our lives or the lives of others. We may try to fix, change, heal – but we are ‘doing’ something to manipulate what is happening. Doing is just a way to change our outside world. We may do things from fear or from a place of love – however it is still ‘doing’ something on the outside in hopes to change how we feel about what is happening on the inside. The outside world is dictating to us how to respond to a given situation. And this is backwards!

’Doing’ is a means to an end but ‘Being’ is a choice.

What happens to us isn’t a choice – how we respond to it is. How we choose to ‘show up’ to the world is a choice. How we choose to BE in any given moment is a choice. The outside dictates our reactions only when we are unconscious and stuck in linear time – thinking about the past or future and not in the NOW moment. We can choose to respond to any situation out of Love and Compassion. We can choose to BE happy or be angry when someone does something we don’t like. We can begin our day setting an intention of how we want to feel or BE during the day and make a conscious effort to remain in that energy all day regardless of what happens around us – because we have a choice! We are the only one who can choose how to ‘show up’ in our lives.

Let me explain the bit about being unconscious and stuck in linear time. When something happens – good or bad – we/our brain (ego) automatically reacts to situations from our past experiences and our reactions are mostly unconscious. This is our brain’s way of compartmentalizing various responses and how we create patterns. Our brain believes we have already ‘defined’ our experiences and our emotions and sees each event as similar to another event so our brain automatically responds the same way as it did in the past. This is typically where we get stuck – because we have responded to betrayal or an accident or pretty much anything that has ever happened to us in the same way as we have before. It is why we see the world the way we do. It is part of our ‘story’ and that story continues unconsciously until we begin to see the world for the first time again … as we stand in the present moment BEing fully conscious. Then and only then can we choose how we want to respond in any given situation. And also be aware that there is a choice in how to respond.

What happens to us isn’t a choice – how we respond to it is.

Let us consider our media – it is full of fear and promotes a world where fear establishes how we respond in situations and therefore we can be more easily manipulated towards buying certain products and reacting towards other life situations. Media seems to believe we need or want to stimulate our emotions through fear. How many shows, books, and news events are full of fear? In fact most newscasts are heavily permeated with events that elicit fear as a response. Of course fear is the opposite of love and consists of all the negative emotions like anger, frustration, envy, betrayal even hate. How many people are persuaded by the fear that is propagated via media? We believe that we are all victims just waiting for the next robber, murderer or other negative ‘event’ to happen. We are also in a world filled with organizations that believe they can help us by perpetuating the ‘victim mentality’. Our media elicits reactions from us by manipulating how we see, respond and share events. How many times have you changed how you viewed an event because media swayed your ‘feelings’ toward what happened or is about to happen? How many times have you made a decision on something like the legalization of marijuana (which occurred nationwide in Canada on Oct 17th) and you may have initially thought it was a good thing but then listened to the fear that the media proliferated and then you began to question your own beliefs and thoughts on the matter? This happens all the time and most of the time we are completely unaware why our belief may have changed. We don’t always recognize how fear manipulates our responses to situations where fear was not there in the past. We are manipulated to respond by outside influences and we react accordingly.

Some people even believe that fear is necessary to help us see the ‘truth’. There are many ‘spiritual teachers/leaders’ that believe that by revealing the truth – which is often laced with fear that this will assist us to grow. Maybe believing that only fear motivates change is how some may see it but I don’t adhere to that philosophy and I believe that no matter what is happening outside of us we have the choice to choose how we respond. In fact, I believe we can only change our outer world by facing our fears and choosing Love! Bringing us full circle – we have a choice – and we can choose Love or Fear within us first. By choosing Love we change what happens outside in the world. By choosing Fear we change what happens outside in our world. Events happen every moment of every day and bad things, bad events, can happen to good people – but are we ever really victims? I say NO because we can choose how we respond to any event. It doesn’t mean it won’t make us afraid – but fear doesn’t have to debilitate us. We can choose to move beyond the fear and do Great things by choosing to Love or by having compassion and empathy over living. Or we can respond in a fearful way.

I invite you to make a conscious choice how you want to BE and how you want to ‘show up’ in your life.

I invite you to make a conscious choice how you want to BE and how you want to ‘show up’ in your life. And as each day proceeds – we can make a conscious effort to BE how we want to BE! Our purpose is to Grow Up and this happens by our BEcoming conscious and choosing Love, Acceptance, and Compassion for ourselves and for others. Let’s create the world we want – not the world dictated to us through fear. When we ‘do’ something let’s be conscious of how we are feeling and BEing about it. Let’s do this from a place of BEing Love. My Heart to Yours.

The Filters of Fear or Love

Last month we discussed “expectations and attachments” and how they impact our enjoyment of life through keeping us stuck in how we respond to situations and people. Through this I shared that we all have filters on how we view the world. We often find it difficult to comprehend how a certain filter, such as the feelings of abandonment, insignificance, not being enough, being unlovable or being unappreciated can impact how an event is perceived in our lives. And the reality is that we all have these filters of fear! Our filters impact how we interpret and view the world. Our filters block us from experiencing the Truth and BEing Open to Love where we would have no filters.

How do these filters come to be? We would have chosen to work through certain patterns, beliefs and fears with our Soul Group prior to coming to this life. Whether you believe in having one life or multiple, we are still connected to the larger consciousness system or Source or the Universe or God in a way that our Spirit is connected to a higher power. This allows us to have a support system – our Soul Group – that works with us to grow our consciousness or evolve our spirit. To do this we offer to work with individuals who will assist us to grow and evolve. We choose a certain view on the world as part of this growth process. This view is how we see the world. That is why when things happen we often default towards a certain belief. The default positions are the  filters that are prevalent throughout our lives and we may not even be conscious of how these filters impact our lives.

Let’s look at how our filters work. Since it is something I have worked with most of my life I can offer ‘abandonment’ as an example. When your core filter is around abandonment it makes you see abandonment in most areas of your life. When a friend, family or situation happens we often view it through this filter. We see a break-up as abandonment, someone upset or angry as abandonment, someone passing away as abandonment, financial difficulties as abandonment, job challenges as abandonment – do you see how ubiquitous it can become? When we are in a relationship we filter everything that happens as abandonment and this fear changes the relationship. The problem is that our partner will have a whole other filter with which they see the world. And each person believes what they see to be the truth: that their perceptions are what they are seeing in reality. However, they are seeing the world through a filter or even several filters.

When we get in an argument or altercation with another person we argue because we believe we are ‘right’. Yet there is no clear definition of what is right and wrong when you have a filter perceiving each event and person. The filter in itself is skewing the result or perception. Yet we will get angry fighting our perspective and have no idea that our filter is even engaged. The fight no longer has to do with what is going on but rather on what the other person is doing to trigger our ‘abandonment’ filter.
What can we do? First we need to establish what our filters and triggers are. How does our filter skew how we see the world? How prevalent is this filter in our life? How conscious are we? Then it would benefit us to be as conscious of our emotions or feelings at all times. The reason being that if we are anything other than happy then we are allowing our filters of fear to interfere with our wellbeing!

On the other hand, Love can change the nature of our filters… When we give Love we open ourselves to viewing and perceiving the world differently. Love is a fascinating topic; it is the only true energy that exists. When we let go of our fears, Love prevails! It also can change our perceptions – we can clearly understand when we are not in Love and it allows us to make a choice – how would we rather BE? Love isn’t the emotion that we believe it is. Love just IS! It is the absence of fear. It resonates from our Divine Spark that connects us to our Source. It is the only energy that exists. That is why when we have fears around money, the energy of money can be restrictive. It is because our filter of fear continues to create our perceptions and this will influence how we view money and restrict the flow of energy – in this case ‘money’ or ‘money energy’. When we remember that everything is energy and energy is Love – then there are no restrictions – everything will flow.

When we are conscious of our thoughts, feelings and emotions then we can make a choice – do you want to experience the world through your fears or through Love? We can BEcome present and aware each moment we are expressing through our filters of fear and being present and aware means we can then choose to Open to the flow of Love instead. Love flows effortlessly. Fears change how we see the world. Obviously we would all prefer to have life flow without restriction and the only way this can occur is by remembering that we are in charge of how we respond to situations and people. When we feel ourselves in a perpetual loop of our underlying filter of fear we know we are restricted and not seeing the world clearly. On the other hand, if we can feel this loop we can make another choice. The brilliance of life is that we can always make another choice. I choose to BE aware of the filters that focus on the fears that I have chosen to work through in this life. I choose to hold space by opening up to the Flow of Love that is ever present, at all times. I choose Love.

Transitions: Fears from Change to Death

Transition can mean several different things. It can mean change; it can mean we are going through a different phase in our lives; or it can mean the ultimate transition, death. There seems to be a lot of fear around ‘transition’ and ‘change’ and maybe there is something in the word ‘transition’ that brings up our wounded child who is afraid of the unknown. For me the month of June brought with it the end of a cycle of ‘transitions’ over the past year and with the end of a cycle of ‘transitions’ perhaps I am seeing things more clearly and am more able to face other transitions yet to be without the same kind of anxiety I may have in the past. My brother was buried June 30th 2016; my cat Jasper transitioned Oct 1st, 2016, and finally my mother transitioned and was buried June 28th 2017. They say bad luck comes in threes but for me these three transitions were symbolic of a deeper message around letting go. The power of three huge occurrences that happened in one year suggests to me that my life has been completely reborn into something new. My being reborn is like a transition toward freedom. I have an opportunity to see the world anew and look at what is most important to me and maybe to look at what I have been afraid to do and allow the Universe to show me something I can’t even imagine. THAT would be most important to me, that act of just allowing myself to change how I look at the world and that would help bring about change or transition in me that is freeing. So there really is no need to fear change.

I often wonder why we fear change and the unknown. If we believe our Soul is eternal then there is no change – like the transition we make from this world to another at what is called ‘death’ – that is ever really unknown. No major transition could possibly happen to us that we haven’t already experienced and therefore we should hardly fear it. Even death, albeit most difficult for the ones left behind, is just a transition to another state of BEing … and we get to go ‘home’. What could be better than that?

What I was finally able to heal by the end of this transitions episode was my abandonment issue, as central to my understanding with the most recent passing of my mother. And I wasn’t triggered in ways that I have been. So as my mother was preparing for her transition – that came on very quickly and surprisingly – I was able to hold space and quickly come to terms with her passing. I know she is free and with that I too have a greater freedom than I have ever had.

The journey began with my brother, who I was holding as he began his ascension. And I believe my sweet boy Jasper allowed me to dive deeper into this sacred wound and with the bringing of my adorable girl Angel I was finally able to see just how immortal our souls are; as she was the combination of the three most important beloved pets (human carers) in my life.

So then the question remains: what is it about change, transition, and the unknown that we fear so much? While preparing for my interview with Paul Selig – that had to be rescheduled because of all the time I spent with my mother as she was transitioning – I realized just how powerful the present moment is and I became very aware of some ‘truths’ that I may have known on a mental level but never truly felt on a BEing level.

As an aside I must say that I’m very much looking forward to this interview with Paul, an interview that has been rescheduled for Sept 12th. He is writing a very powerful trilogy. The Book of Mastery was released in 2016 and The Book of Truth: The Mastery Trilogy came out in mid-2017 and the third is to be released next year. I highly recommend any of his books but the first two of his new trilogy profoundly affected me. There are very powerful words and initiations that lie within these channeled words.

So back to my question: ‘what do we fear?’ I believe this is a question we must explore deeply within ourselves as it could be the answer – and a way – toward healing our sacred core wounds. To me the answers and healings occurred while reading and feeling Paul’s transformative words. These powerful and changing words affected me possibly more than even my personal trilogy of events that occurred this past year. I believe these events signaled an important phase in my life and maybe were the catalyst to personal healing but I also believe I have been being prepared for this particular change moment throughout my whole life. I feel reborn! Awakened in a way I have yet experienced. And it is through my continuing to explore all the different ways fear affects my life.

I also have the opportunity to work with some beautiful souls who are trying to understand their own core wounds. Through working with others I can often see more clearly what they need to do and it assists me to heal and BE clearer within my own triggers. The motto that I try to live by is: ‘Lead By Example’. When someone I know or work with is going through something I know on deeper levels it is something I am learning about myself and before recommending different options I ensure I live them first and foremost. This enables me to heal many of my issues that are more easily triggered. Some issues clear up even without direct experience. Still others become clearer because I now understand past experiences from a deeper place.

I believe the way to understand our issues the most is by detaching ourselves from the intensity or the emotional charge of the experience and the way we can do this is by reviewing our experiences. “Remembering the Light Within” is another incredible book from the Hulnick’s who I interviewed last month. The book offered some excellent thoughts that can help you if you are open to seeing things from a different perspective such as:
  • Our spiritual curriculum is to heal our unresolved issues;
  • Unresolved issues are anything that disturbs our Peace;
  • Unresolved issues are not bad; they’re simply part of our Spiritual Curriculum;
  • Unresolved issues are blessings, as they are opportunities for Healing and Awakening;
  • The work of Healing, or resolving unresolved issues, is spiritual work and is a major aspect of what Spiritual Awakening is all about; and
  • Observing Both our Inner and Outer Choices as we are the only one who can choose our attitude toward how we relate with ourselves, others, and the situations and circumstances in our life.
  • Will it be judging or accepting, criticizing or prizing? This last question is very important. Can we come from a place of unconditional love, acceptance and compassion towards ourselves and others?
The universe and our eternal Soul offer us infinite opportunities to heal our unresolved issues. If we don’t heal an issue it will be repeated until we can – even if it takes several lifetimes. This is the beauty of this physical reality. However, we must be open to fully embracing these teachings and pursuing the only true goals each life holds, to awaken to the present moment, acknowledge our choices of fear over love and know we are in charge of our story to truly heal and change our perception of our experiences: simple but not easy. And yet I feel I have overcome some of my deepest sacred wounds in my own trilogy of transitions that have taken place around me over the past year. The answer to understanding the ongoing transitions that seem to constantly flow around us lies within and can be revealed by the continuous pursuit of our Awakening. Walk with me (or run since everything seems to be at warp speed) as we take this path together.

The Masks we Wear!

As we just completed the Halloween holiday my attention was focusing on the masks we wear! I completed an interview with Tom Campbell recently and masks came up as a theme. I feel that this ‘masks’ theme will also be covered with Christopher Papadopoulos Nov 10th airing Nov 16th.

One of my thoughts around this theme is that we wear masks all the time as we try to be – or hope to be – someone other’s will like and appreciate. You know the masks I’m talking about: the ‘family’ masks we wear to try and please others in the family; the ‘relationship’ masks we wear to our significant other so that they won’t ‘leave us’; the ‘work’ masks we wear when we dislike our job/co-worker/boss etc. We find all sorts of different ways to wear a mask believing that our masked self is who people want to see. The problem is if we wear a mask long enough we get stuck in it. We can’t be authentic by dropping the masks to the people we know well and maybe even love because how do we change now after having worn the mask so long? Or we may forget our authentic self completely and just keep wearing the masks!

Another thought I had about masks as we celebrated Halloween is that people can often be more authentic when they dress up and participate in Halloween. We also do this with alcohol and vacations. Why is it we can feel comfortable BEing our authentic selves with some makeup to hide who we are, with some alcohol to give us courage to BE who we are, or with a vacation where we can experiment with pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones into our authentic selves or is it just because we are in a different place where no one knows us so we are able to BE our authentic selves?

Fear is the problem that we try to resolve through masks and it is courage that we require to free us from our masks or fear. Fear definitely is the culprit that helps us create our masks. We are afraid that we aren’t enough as we are and that we must be nicer, friendlier, and more aloof to hide our insecurities. And ultimately we are trying to be happier to please other people so that they will ‘like’ us and not ‘leave’ us!

The thing with happiness is that it isn’t something we can pretend. And it isn’t something outside of us. It comes from our ‘BEing’ level! It comes from who we are authentically. If fear prohibits us from being who we are, authentically, and courage is what will eventually allow us to be our authentic self, then why are masks used to make us feel safe?

I believe what happens is that we are unconsciously driven by our fears and we eventually walk around like sleepwalkers, unaware that we pretend to be someone else. As children we were naturally authentic and often didn’t care about what others thought of us but this fear crept in as we were disciplined and punished for BEing who we are. It became so ingrained in us to BE this person who would win approval that we kept on the masks that won approval and this ‘stuck’ on us and we became the masked person and forgot our authentic self.

We experiment with different masks on occasions such as Halloween, or in alcohol-infused situations, or on vacations and we have more courage, and as a result are more authentic, with these masks on. It is also probable that people use Halloween (masquerade) parties, alcohol and drugs, and even vacations to distract themselves from feeling uncomfortable about their lives as well as to give themselves courage. These distracting behaviors can be expressions of addictions and although I’m not going to delve into our ‘addictions’ in this article it is still worth mentioning because it is fear that pushes us to resort to addictions just as it is fear that makes us reach for masks.

I believe we want to experiment to remember who we are. And as we experiment we feel like we don’t have to worry that others will judge us when we wear an actual mask on Halloween or when we are ‘under the influence’ of alcohol, or are on vacation when we won’t be recognized and won’t be seeing again the people we meet. Ultimately these occasions assist us to feel safe BEing who we are.

So how can we remove our masks and be more authentic just as we may be on Halloween, under the influence of alcohol, or on vacation? I believe it will only happen when we are aware of what we are truly afraid of and breathe into our fears to see that they aren’t real but only part of our ‘story’. It can only happen if we choose to authentically feel into our bodies instead of avoiding feeling uncomfortable. It will happen when we get quiet and connect to the ‘now’ moment and with our body’s innate wisdom. It will happen when we feel safe inside enough to BE who we are. It will happen when we practice BEing our authentic self and not worrying about feeling judged for BEing who we are!

We can do this and perhaps instead of seeing these masks as a distraction we can allow our awareness of these masks to transport us towards our growth. And we can allow our Halloween experiences and our ‘vacation time’ to magically carry us into new opportunities to practice BEing authentic. Let’s have fun with this and celebrate our uniqueness!
