Are you Compromising too much?

I’ve been contemplating compromise in the grand scheme of our lives. We are taught that we should be “in service” to the world; that if we want to love it is about “giving”; and that our ego is “bad”. Then I reflected upon our dreams and desires, how we need to set intentions and be clear about what we want so the Universe can deliver our dreams, as long as we can let go and not try to control the outcome. I also considered relationships, which is really the only way we grow, so therefore, are probably one of the most important resources to develop. And finally, I pondered about what it means to focus outside ourselves instead of inside where the magic can happen. These thoughts all brought me to try and understand whether we compromise too much of who we are in life, so that we can follow the expectations of the world (spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally).

We seem to live in a world full of dichotomy, full of demands and expectations, full of what is “right vs wrong” and it becomes difficult to wrap our minds around what we need to do for ourselves. Do we compromise who we are in relationships, whether they are our intimate relationships, family, friends or work colleagues? I know I have! Trying to do the right thing often leads us to compromise something within us. A dream, a belief or a value that is in-congruent to who we are at a soul level. When our boss requests we do something, and our job is contingent on completing our tasks, do we have a choice? What about when our spouse requests we set aside something that we are doing to assist them, or want us to do something that we don’t or can’t because it is against our inner core? The other problem is when are we just feeding our ego and its needs, doing something that is what we need from a soul desire or opening our hearts and just plain giving? Ego is really just what we want! It doesn’t take into consideration “others”. Compromise and ego don’t really have a middle ground. Do our dreams, intentions and desires have to take a back seat to compromising for the good of our relationships?

When is compromising the “right” thing to do and when does it corrode who we are and our Soul’s dreams? We have to honor our inner convictions and inner self. I think part of the problem is that we aren’t always conscious of our inner values and belief systems. Probably this is where we have to begin the search or deep understanding of who we are. I believe that when two people are in a relationship dynamic that comes from different spectrums of the same thought (example is the love vs fear spectrum, one person may be responding from a place of love, the other from fear) we can discuss it rationally to get the other person to see both sides of the spectrum. But sometimes it may be about compromising part of what you need for the greater good of the relationship. Perhaps as long as you aren’t settling for something that is essential to who you are, maybe compromising is okay. Or maybe it has more to do with as long as we are whole and residing in and honoring that place of wholeness within ourselves, when someone asks us to do something, it is not a compromise, you just do it or you don’t and there is no story about it because you are whole and you are existing in that place of wholeness. The problem comes from when we are not in this state or place of wholeness and then we simply exist from a place and state of compromise. This is when awareness is key to our understanding of what is compromise and how we define who we are!

Take some time and reflect how well you are able to honor and respect yourself in relationship with yourself and in relationship with others. Are there areas in your life where you compromise yourself? Maybe some areas you have mastered and others need some attention.

It is important to recognize the difference between compromising what you want and compromising who you are.

Just Breathe!

2014 has been a challenging year for many people up until this point, with all the retrograde planets, the eclipses and the Grand Cardinal Cross (that is still present for quite a while, but not as direct as last week), sometimes it is hard to Breathe! However, I feel confident that all of this energy is about to shift. I believe with the coming of this solar eclipse on April 29th, with Mars going direct May 20th, things will ease up. Our major learning has been around our deepest core fears and where we intend to evolve as a planet and as individuals. Where we want to move next! What we want to focus our intentions on for the next major period of our lives.

What I have noticed is that people have been so preoccupied with what has been happening within and around them that they haven’t been clear enough to breathe! We are not grounded and not conscious of what is truly important at this time, which is to focus on what we truly desire most right now. So this article is about what would assist us most, just breathe.

What I have realized, is that my health has been interfering with my ability to enjoy life. It’s becoming very clear to me that regaining my health must become the top priority before I can focus on the other areas in my life. Ironically, the other areas of my life are being taken care of which creates some space for me to prepare myself to focus on my health.

For me, just breathing is coming to a place of acceptance and awareness that it is critical for me to be pain free and having enough energy to get up and enjoy the day. Meditation, diet and exercise are critical to my overall well-being. Certain food triggers pain and dis-ease, even if it distracts me from emotional pain or boredom that I have been using to self-medicate or to enjoy something in my life.

On the road to self-recovery or self-maintenance, there are certain things we need to be conscious of. Are we grounded? Is the only energy that is interfering with us our own and where is our focus of intention? I can’t tell you how important it is to be grounded. If we aren’t grounded, we aren’t present. If we aren’t present we aren’t centered and connected to our inner being. Therefore we can’t be conscious of where we are or where we are going, or the opposite, where we aren’t and where we aren’t going. This also flows into being aware of all the things that are affecting our energy.

Life is hard enough with all of our own triggers, but for those of us who are empathic, nurturers and healers, we tend to have a lot more in our energies, that are interfering or mingling in our energetic field, than just our own. So, take some time to clear your energy and set up healthy boundaries with your friends, family and colleagues, instead of being a conduit for their energy. This can often be done quite easily by just meditating and requesting that all energy but your own be present and releasing all others. There are plenty of meditations that assist with clearing your energy. This can often be a life saver.

Lastly, be aware of what it is you truly desire. Prior to having a host of different health concerns, my focus had been on who I wanted to portray to this world. What I focused on was what I could do to support me. Once my body began to break down from the stress and betrayal I had experienced in the past few years, my focus shifted away from worrying about basic survival needs. Letting go of controlling this aspect of my life enabled me to just be. Also, as my dear friend Jean Adrienne reminded me, we keep forgetting that we aren’t the source of the problem or the source of the solution. We have to surrender and let our inner and outer source take the driver’s seat! The only thing we need to be aware of is what our intention is at any given moment. Instead of worrying about all the details and planning for our life, we just need to set our intention on what is important and then have faith in the unfolding of our intentions for each situation, crisis, relationship and for each and every day. We need to feel safe and stop trying to control what is happening, just know it is exactly how it is meant to be. Let your intentions guide you in creating and living the life you love!

I hope that this assists you take a moment during these stressful times and Just Breathe!

What are you Resisting?

This week I interviewed Daniel Bax who suffered what was potentially a life threatening accident and he has become an inspiration for us all in transforming our lives and overcoming obstacles. He has faced the resistance of his body, mind and spirit through his intense life journey and has excelled beyond anyone’s expectations. However, for most of us we have to be ever vigilant and mindful of where and when resistance is taking over our conscious or more often unconscious thought process.

We all require consistent awareness of our present state of BEing. When we are struggling against doing something (like writing a newsletter, or getting up to go for a walk) we need to uncover what our intention is, where our motivation is and whether our resistance is mental, emotional, physical or spiritual. I know what it is like to be depressed and resistant to doing what I know will make me feel better. If I indulge in my depression or my feelings of victimhood or just my low energy, I will not be able to get out of bed. This doesn’t assist me on my life’s purpose or goals. It also doesn’t build up my energy, but keeps it stagnant and doesn’t preclude to my getting any better.

Often our resistance is a gift to understanding what areas of our lives we want to transform to be the best we can be. It may also show us where we are or rather are not and/or how our fears block us. Setting our intentions assists us to be clearer of what we want. When we have resistance we likely have an emotional, physical, mental or spiritual belief that stops us from moving forward. When we have resistance to doing anything, it would benefit us to examine what we are resisting and where the belief is interfering with our intentions. Breathing, as simple as it is, can be the most effective tool we have to opening a pathway through our resistance and change our energetic state. I’m an advocate on BEing vs doing, and often believe that most of our obstacles will occur first at the BEing level. Most of us, from our deepest intention, want to be Happy. That means that no matter what it is we desire, beneath all our desires is the common thread that we just want to be happy. We see a fast car, or a bigger house, or a newer computer as a condition to make us happy. However, happiness comes from within us, not from material or external things. Happiness is an emotional response and can be created from the inside out. So create the intention to BE happy, and let all actions, thoughts, and responses come from our desire to be Happy. If all else fails, when you feel resistance to something, ask yourself what would make you happy right now? Do something to make yourself happy, and then use that emotional response to create the rest of your day.

My other constant belief is that we need to come to a place of acceptance. Sometimes what will make us happy isn’t immediately possible, (like you may want to lose 30-40 pounds right now). We can accept that there is a reason that we are where we are right now, and find a way to be comfortable with where and who you are in this moment. This can be more readily achieved when coming from a state of BEing rather than from berating yourself for being into this state of frustration or depression. We can also look for the gift that what we don’t want is in our lives right now.

Ultimately, it comes down to awareness of our responses to what is happening in our lives and when there are blocks of resistance that prohibits our dreams from being achieved. Learn to BE what it is you desire from within and allow your outside world to reflect your level of BEing. You are ultimately in charge. Instead of focusing on not being where you are, discover the gift that you are offering to yourself with your life the way it is. Now breathe into it and see what opens up to you!

Will you be in the Magic of the Moment this Holiday Season?

When we are truly in the Magic of the Moment, we are giving from the heart with no expectations. We feel washed over with joy in just being. At the same time, we remain authentic to ourselves and do not compromise who we are. Hopefully you can close your eyes and recall exactly how this feels in your heart and your body. Remember that feeling and make a promise to yourself to create Moments of Magic this holiday season!

How do you help yourself keep such a promise? Give Love! Not only to others but to yourself too! When you do something, don’t do it because you have to, but because you honestly, with an open Heart, want to! If you are asked to do something that triggers you, shift into a different space of unconditional giving or if it is something that doesn’t feel authentic, discuss it with them or find a way to stay true to who you are without being triggered! Most importantly, know whether this is your trigger or something that feels inauthentic! It isn’t our journey to heal, fix or change someone else, but it is for us to evolve and grow spiritually.

One of the biggest triggers around the holiday season for many people is unmet expectations. Recently, Jean Adrienne and I had a great show on family expectations. Listen here. Often without realizing it we push our needs onto others, expect them to reciprocate by meeting our needs and then we get upset because our needs are not being met!

There are many triggers that occur in family environments, they are often the very earliest memories that continue to be a pattern in our lives. Often the biggest problem is that not only are you unaware what your trigger is, but you don’t know what you need either! You don’t know how to meet your own needs, let alone have someone else meet your needs for you. We want others to know us, yet, we barely know ourselves.

We also have a problem with being authentic. We often do things because we feel we have to instead of wanting to, especially with our families around the Holidays. As parents, we feel we can tell our children what to do and as children we naturally want to rebel when our parents demand something of us. We all have problems being able to say no and often we are left feeling guilt and shame. This pattern repeats in many areas of our lives, but our family can trigger this the most.

So how do you avoid this miserable cycle? Through understanding yourself, learning what your needs are and how to meet them, you will discover the most important piece of the puzzle of YOU and the secret to living in the Magical Moments of the holidays!

We can begin to understand ourselves by knowing what we need when we get triggered. The best way to establish this is to get really centered at the start of each day. Whenever we begin to feel unbalanced throughout the day just step away and focus on your breathing, ground yourself and determine what your calm level is. Ask yourself what it is you desire right now? Notice your body’s responses and reactions. Are you feeling anxious? Are you feeling centered? Once you are centered, grounded and feeling calm, then this is your starting point (your ground zero). From this point you will be able to determine when you get triggered. When you feel yourself straying from this point, ask yourself what is different, what do you need?

This is where we can learn the most about ourselves and our triggers. It also gives us an opportunity to respond instead of react. Determining what we need can be tricky, for many we learn to forsake our needs for others (especially around our families), for others, our needs may be misunderstood for something else (eg. we may believe we desire food to emotionally eat instead of dealing with what is causing the emotional reaction). It is really only what we know about ourselves that can assist us in determining our needs, yet it is discovering this calm level that will allow us the place to determine when we go off balance.

We all have memories of the Magic of the Holidays; we all have a desired outcome for the Holidays. Reach into your memory of a time when you still believed in the Magic of Santa and/or Giving and use this memory to guide you on how you would like to feel this Holiday Season. Use this as your calm point and imagine your heart to be fully open to Giving and Love for yourself and others. This is the true spirit of the Holidays!
